Perfluoriyhdisteet, in Finnish, refers to perfluorinated compounds, a subset of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). These are synthetic chemicals characterized by fully fluorinated carbon chains with a functional group, giving them unique properties such as resistance to heat, water, and oil.

Key properties of perfluoriyhdisteet include extreme chemical stability due to strong carbon–fluorine bonds, persistence in the environment, and a tendency to bioaccumulate in living organisms. Many of these compounds are amphiphilic, tending to accumulate at interfaces between air, water, and lipids.

Common examples include PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid), PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonate), PFHxS (perfluorohexane sulfonate), and PFNA (perfluorononanoic acid). They have historically been used in a wide range of applications such as coatings for textiles, paper products, and carpets, non-stick cookware, firefighting foams, and electrical insulation. Due to health and environmental concerns, many uses have been restricted or replaced in recent decades in various regions.

Environmental and health considerations: PFAS are persistent contaminants found globally in soil, water, and biota, including humans. Some perfluoriyhdisteet have long biological half-lives. Epidemiological studies associate PFAS exposure with effects on immune, thyroid and lipid systems, and potential developmental and cancer-related endpoints, though causal links are not fully established. Vulnerable populations may be disproportionately affected.

Regulation and management: Many PFAS are subject to regulatory action. The Stockholm Convention lists PFOS and PFOA for global controls, while other PFAS are regulated or monitored through national programs. Detection relies on advanced analytical methods such as LC-MS/MS. Remediation approaches include activated carbon, ion-exchange resins, and high-temperature destruction, though complete removal from the environment remains challenging.

Terminology: Perfluoriyhdisteet describe fully fluorinated PFAS, whereas polyfluorinated compounds are related but not fully fluorinated. Ongoing research seeks safer alternatives and clearer exposure guidance.
