Perencounter

Perencounter is a term used in data analytics and management to describe metrics calculated on a per-encounter basis. An encounter is a discrete interaction between a user, patient, or system and a service or application, such as a medical visit, a customer support call, or a software session. The term is not standardized in formal vocabularies, but it is widely used informally to emphasize per-event measurement rather than aggregate totals over time.

Common perencounter metrics include cost per encounter, revenue per encounter, duration per encounter, and resource utilization per encounter. Calculation follows the simple formula: perencounter value = total value divided by the number of encounters in the defined period. For example, total cost divided by total patient encounters yields cost per encounter; total minutes of support time divided by number of calls yields average duration per encounter. Perencounter metrics support benchmarking, budgeting, and process improvement because they normalize data by the number of encounters rather than by patient or time alone.

Challenges include inconsistent definitions of what counts as an encounter, data quality issues, and the risk of counting duplicates or non-value-added interactions. To be effective, organizations should agree on a clear encounter definition, set a reliable counting method, and align calculations with related standards such as billing codes or session logs. When used carefully, perencounter metrics can inform operational decisions and performance comparisons across units.
