Perceptimet

Perceptimet is a theoretical metric used in cognitive psychology and neuroscience to quantify the distance between perceptual representations of stimuli. It is intended to function like a physical distance unit, but its scale is defined by perceptual judgments rather than by spatial coordinates. The term derives from percept (perception) and metric, and it is not a universally standardized unit; different studies may define and calibrate it in distinct ways.

Definition and properties. In the perceptimet framework, 0 typically denotes identical or indistinguishable stimuli, while positive values indicate increasing perceptual difference. The exact numerical mapping depends on the experimental design and the perceptual space being modeled. Perceptimet values are often interpreted within a modeled space rather than as an absolute physical quantity, meaning that comparisons are meaningful within a given study but not necessarily across unrelated experiments.

Measurement and methods. Perceptimet is usually inferred from tasks that reveal perceptual structure, such as similarity judgments, discrimination thresholds, or reaction-time measures. Data are analyzed with dimensionality-reduction or scaling techniques (for example, multidimensional scaling) to place stimuli in a perceptual space.
