The language guidance typically favors constructions such as “a person with a disability” rather than “a disabled person.” The movement also acknowledges debates about language, recognizing some communities prefer identity-first terms such as “disabled person” to express pride and solidarity.

In practice, PeopleFirst initiatives may include leadership development, inclusive decision-making, and policies that remove barriers to participation. While the term is widely used, it exists alongside alternative framings of disability identity, and the preferred terminology can vary by country, culture, and individual preference.
