Pengeudgiften

Pengeudgiften is a Danish term that denotes the spending of money by economic agents. In economics, it refers to outlays of funds by households, firms and governments and is a central component of national accounts. The concept covers various forms of outlays, including consumption of goods and services, investments in capital, and government purchases of goods and services.

The term is commonly separated into private and public expenditure. Private pengeudgifter include household consumption and private investments in physical assets. Public pengeudgifter refer to government spending, which can be divided into current expenditures (driftsudgifter) and capital expenditures (anlægsudgifter) for infrastructure and other long-term projects. Transfers to individuals are sometimes treated differently in accounting, as they redistribute income rather than constitute direct final outlays by the recipient’s viewpoint.

Measurement and role in the economy: In national accounts, final expenditure is a key element of GDP and is typically described as household consumption, gross capital formation, and government consumption and investment, with net exports accounting for the remaining demand component. The level and composition of pengeudgiften influence aggregate demand, inflation and economic growth through the multiplier effect and investment dynamics. Fiscal policy often targets pengeudgifter to fund services, infrastructure, social programs and operating costs.

Context and usage: The word is widely used in Danish-language economics, budgeting and public-finance literature. It is often used interchangeably with udgifter, though pengeudgiften emphasizes monetary outlays specifically, while udgifter can refer to any outlay or expense.
