Peertopeer, often written as peer-to-peer or abbreviated P2P, refers to a distributed computing model in which participants (peers) directly share resources with each other without relying on a centralized server.

In P2P networks, each peer can simultaneously request and provide resources, acting as both client and server. Resources are discovered through protocols and overlays, such as trackers, distributed hash tables (DHTs), or unstructured flood-based methods. Common topologies include centralized tracker-based, fully distributed DHT, and unstructured overlays.

Applications include file sharing (BitTorrent), content distribution, and the basis for some messaging and VoIP systems. Some networks use P2P for distributed computing and storage (for example, certain cloud storage or backup schemes) and for cryptocurrency networks where transactions and blocks are relayed across a P2P ledger.

Advantages of peertopeer include scalability, resilience, reduced need for powerful central servers, and efficient use of network bandwidth through swarming. Disadvantages include potential for illegal use, security risks (malware, tampered data), challenges in establishing trust and data integrity, variable latency, and issues with peers behind NATs or firewalls.
