Pedipalpers

Pedipalpers are a group of arachnids belonging to the order Palpigradi, commonly known as harvestmen or daddy longlegs. They are characterized by their elongated pedipalps, which are used for sensing and manipulating prey. Pedipalpers are found worldwide, inhabiting a variety of environments including forests, grasslands, and even urban areas. They are generally small, with most species measuring less than 10 millimeters in length.

The order Palpigradi is divided into two suborders: Eupalpigradi and Parapalpigradi. Eupalpigradi includes the majority of species and is further divided into two infraorders: Palpigradoidea and Rhopalophoroidea. Parapalpigradi, on the other hand, includes only a few species and is considered a more primitive group.

Pedipalpers play an important role in their ecosystems by controlling populations of smaller arthropods. They are also of interest to arachnologists due to their unique morphology and behavior. Despite their small size, pedipalpers have a complex life cycle, with some species undergoing a period of dormancy during unfavorable conditions.

Pedipalpers are generally harmless to humans and do not pose a threat. However, some species may bite if provoked, and their venom can cause mild irritation. They are also known to be cannibalistic, with some species feeding on other pedipalpers.
