Peavõrgust

Peavõrgust is an Estonian term used to describe the core or central network within a larger system. In telecommunications and information technology, peavõrgust refers to the backbone that interconnects regional networks, data centers, and service points, providing high-capacity, low-latency transport for traffic. The term can also be used metaphorically to describe the central control network of an organization or service platform, from which other networks and services emanate.

The word is formed from pea meaning "head" and võrk meaning "network." In practical use, peavõrgust is most common in technical literature and vendor documentation; its precise meaning can differ by context, with some speakers emphasizing physical infrastructure (fiber, routers) and others focusing on logical connectivity and control planes.

Core network design emphasizes scalability, reliability, and security. A typical peavõrgust comprises backbone routers, high-capacity links (often fiber), data-center interconnects, and interconnection points with other networks. Redundancy, load balancing, and fast failover are standard features, while management relies on monitoring, configuration automation, and standardized interfaces to ensure interoperability across vendors and providers.

With the growing adoption of software-defined networking (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV), peavõrgust management increasingly emphasizes programmability and rapid adaptability.
