Peapööritustunne, often translated as dizziness or vertigo, refers to a sensation of unsteadiness, spinning, or lightheadedness. This feeling can range from mild and fleeting to severe and debilitating. It is important to distinguish peapööritustunne from simple lightheadedness, which often resolves quickly and is associated with standing up too fast. True peapööritustunne typically involves a false sense of movement, either of oneself or the surroundings.

The causes of peapööritustunne are diverse and can be related to issues within the inner ear, the brain, or even systemic conditions. Inner ear problems, such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), Meniere's disease, or labyrinthitis, are common culprits. These conditions affect the vestibular system, which is responsible for balance. Neurological issues, including migraines, strokes, or head injuries, can also trigger peapööritustunne. Additionally, certain medications, dehydration, low blood sugar, anxiety, and cardiovascular problems can contribute to this sensation.

Diagnosis usually involves a detailed medical history, a physical examination, and sometimes specialized tests like audiometry or vestibular function tests. Treatment strategies depend on the underlying cause. For inner ear disorders, specific maneuvers or medications may be prescribed. If a neurological cause is identified, treatment will target that specific condition. In some cases, lifestyle modifications, such as dietary changes or stress management techniques, may also be beneficial. If peapööritustunne is persistent, severe, or accompanied by other concerning symptoms like sudden hearing loss, severe headache, or difficulty speaking, immediate medical attention is recommended.
