Patternmodules

Patternmodules are modular units that encapsulate a reusable design pattern along with its configurable parameters, enabling them to be composed to form larger systems. Each patternmodule exposes a defined interface and a minimal state, allowing it to be plugged into other modules without exposing internal details.

Originating in pattern-oriented approaches to software design and configuration management, patternmodules are used in domains such as software architecture, generative design, and templating. They provide a way to treat patterns as first-class building blocks that can be versioned, tested, and swapped.

An individual patternmodule typically includes a description of the pattern's intent, a parameter set, a contract that governs interaction with other modules, and a lightweight implementation or blueprint that realizes the pattern at runtime or during generation. Composition of modules is accomplished via adapters, connectors, or combinators that respect dependency and data flow constraints, enabling hierarchical assembly.

Examples include a module that implements the observer pattern with a configurable notification strategy, a module for a factory pattern with parameterized product types, or a module that encapsulates a simplified mediator for component interaction. In practice, patternmodules are used in configuration languages, code generation pipelines, and component repositories to promote reuse and consistency.

Benefits include improved reuse, clearer separation of concerns, and easier experimentation with alternative configurations. Limitations can include added abstraction overhead, potential over-generalization, and the need for tooling to manage versioning and compatibility among modules.
