Patogénekké, also known as *pathogenic genes*, refers to genetic elements that contribute to the development of diseases in organisms. These genes can be found in bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, and even in the human genome, where they may influence susceptibility to various conditions. Pathogenic genes often encode proteins or molecules that disrupt normal cellular functions, evade the host’s immune system, or promote the proliferation of harmful microorganisms.

In microbial pathogens, such as bacteria and viruses, pathogenic genes are frequently located on plasmids, bacteriophages, or within chromosomal DNA. Examples include genes responsible for toxin production (such as *toxA* in *Pseudomonas aeruginosa*), antibiotic resistance (e.g., *bla* genes encoding beta-lactamases), or adhesion factors that facilitate infection. Horizontal gene transfer—such as conjugation, transduction, or transformation—can spread these genes between microbes, accelerating the emergence of drug-resistant strains.

In humans, pathogenic genes may be inherited or acquired through mutations. Single-gene disorders, like cystic fibrosis (caused by mutations in the *CFTR* gene) or sickle cell anemia (linked to a mutation in the *HBB* gene), result from defective or malfunctioning proteins. Polygenic diseases, such as diabetes or cardiovascular conditions, involve interactions between multiple genes and environmental factors. Some genes may also influence disease susceptibility by modulating immune responses or metabolic pathways.

The study of pathogenic genes is crucial for understanding disease mechanisms, developing diagnostics, and designing targeted therapies. Techniques like CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing and genome-wide association studies (GWAS) help researchers identify and analyze these genetic contributors. Additionally, antimicrobial stewardship and genetic screening aim to mitigate the spread of pathogenic genes in both clinical and environmental settings.
