Pastöroituun

Pastöroituun is a Finnish term referring to pasteurized milk. Pasteurization is a process named after the scientist Louis Pasteur, which involves heating a liquid, such as milk, to a specific temperature for a set period of time to kill harmful bacteria and other microorganisms. This significantly reduces the risk of foodborne illnesses and extends the shelf life of the product.

The most common pasteurization method for milk involves heating it to at least 72 degrees Celsius (161 degrees Fahrenheit) for 15 seconds, known as High-Temperature Short-Time (HTST) pasteurization. Other methods include lower temperatures for longer durations or ultra-high temperature (UHT) processing, which involves heating milk to around 135-150 degrees Celsius (275-302 degrees Fahrenheit) for a few seconds, resulting in a shelf-stable product that does not require refrigeration until opened.

In Finland, as in many other countries, pasteurization is a mandatory process for milk sold commercially to ensure consumer safety. The term "pastöroituun" specifically denotes that the milk has undergone this heat treatment. This process is crucial for public health, making milk a safe and widely consumed beverage. It does not significantly alter the nutritional value of milk, although some minor vitamin losses can occur, these are generally not considered significant in the context of a balanced diet.
