Pastellipuikot, translated as pastel sticks or chalk pastels, are a popular art medium consisting of pigment bound with a minimal amount of binder. They are known for their vibrant colors and powdery texture, which allows for soft blending and layering effects. Pastellipuikot come in various forms, including soft pastels, semi-hard pastels, and oil pastels, each offering a different application experience. Soft pastels are the most powdery and fragile, ideal for creating subtle gradations and atmospheric effects. Semi-hard pastels have a slightly firmer consistency, allowing for more detail and control. Oil pastels, while also called pastels, are made with oil and wax, resulting in a creamier, more crayon-like texture that does not smudge easily.

The application of pastellipuikot typically involves drawing directly onto a textured surface, such as pastel paper or canvas. Artists use the sticks to apply color, often working from light to dark. Blending can be achieved using fingers, tortillons (rolled paper tools), or soft brushes. The powdery nature of pastels means that finished works are delicate and require protection, usually through framing under glass or the application of a fixative spray, which can subtly alter the color intensity.
