Pastaza

Pastaza is a province of Ecuador located in the eastern Amazon region. It is named after the Pastaza River, a major watercourse that runs through the province and contributes to the Amazon Basin. The capital and largest urban center is Puyo, which serves as the administrative and economic hub for the region.

Geography and environment: Pastaza lies mostly in the Amazon rainforest, with landscapes that range from Andean foothills to lowland tropical forests. The landscape supports rich biodiversity and a variety of ecosystems. The province includes portions of Yasuni National Park and other protected areas, protecting numerous species of primates, birds, and reptiles. The climate is tropical and humid, with high rainfall year-round.

People and culture: The population includes a mix of mestizo and indigenous communities, notably Shuar, Achuar and Kichwa. Indigenous languages are spoken alongside Spanish, and traditional practices remain influential in many communities.

Economy and infrastructure: The economy is based on agriculture (bananas, cacao, coffee), cattle ranching, forestry, and increasingly ecotourism. Oil exploration and related activities have also affected the region. Transportation is centered on the city of Puyo, with road connections to other Amazonian provinces and access to river routes along the Pastaza River.

Administration: Pastaza is subdivided into cantons; the province participates in national governance with a focus on conservation, rural development, and indigenous rights.
