Passagebooks

Passagebooks are historical ledgers used in maritime and commercial travel to document the details of voyages. The term refers to a book that functions as a log, itinerary, and evidence record for merchants, shipowners, insurers, and customs officials. Passagebooks typically chronicled the passages of ships, including routes, legs of journeys, and ports of call, as well as practical information about cargo, passengers, and terms of shipment.

Contents and structure often include the vessel’s name, master, flag, and tonnage; names and roles of crew; passenger lists where applicable; cargo description and quantities; ports of departure and destination with corresponding dates; voyage duration; insurance policy references and claims notes; and remarks on delays, weather, inspections, or incidents. The books served multiple purposes: planning future voyages, accounting for financial settlements, supporting insurance claims, and providing a traceable record for customs and legal scrutiny. In some contexts, passagebooks overlapped with passenger manifests and commercial ledgers, especially in long-distance or colonial trade networks.

Historical significance and legacy vary by region, but passagebooks are valued today as primary sources for maritime history, trade routes, and early modern logistics. In modern scholarship, they are studied alongside logbooks and cargo manifests to reconstruct voyage networks and economic practices.
