Partikkeldensitet, often translated as particle density, refers to the mass of a solid material divided by the volume of its constituent particles, excluding pore spaces within the particles themselves. It is a fundamental property used in material science and engineering to characterize solid substances. Unlike bulk density, which includes pore volume, particle density focuses solely on the solid matter.

This property is crucial for understanding how materials will behave in various applications. For instance, in the production of ceramics, the particle density of the raw materials influences the shrinkage during firing and the final density of the ceramic product. In powder metallurgy, it affects the packing efficiency of metal powders and the properties of the resulting sintered parts.

The measurement of particle density typically involves techniques that exclude pore space, such as the pycnometer method. In this method, a known mass of the solid material is introduced into a pycnometer filled with a liquid of known density. The volume of the solid is then determined by measuring the volume of liquid displaced. Particle density is calculated by dividing the mass of the solid by this determined volume. Different materials have distinct particle densities, which can be used for identification and quality control purposes. For example, metal oxides generally have higher particle densities than polymer powders.
