Parenkysytit

Parenkysytit is a term used in certain languages to refer to parenchymal cells—the functional tissue of an organ or of plant tissue—distinguishing it from stroma, which provides structural support. In English, the corresponding concept is parenchyma or parenchymal cells. The exact usage of parenkysytit varies by language and discipline, but it generally denotes the living, metabolically active cells that carry out an organ’s primary functions.

In plants, parenchyma tissue comprises living cells with relatively thin primary walls. These cells are versatile and can participate in photosynthesis (chlorenchyma), storage of starch, oils, and pigments (storage parenchyma), and wound healing or regeneration. Parenchyma forms much of the soft, edible parts of plants and is common in regions such as the leaf mesophyll, the arial ground tissue, and the pith. Parenchyma cells retain the ability to divide and differentiate, enabling growth and repair.

In animals and humans, parenchyma refers to the functional tissue of an organ, as opposed to its supporting stroma. Examples include hepatic parenchyma, composed primarily of hepatocytes, and renal or pulmonary parenchyma, which comprise the cells responsible for the organ’s specialized activities. Parenchymal tissue is typically rich in metabolically active cells, well supplied with blood vessels, and capable of regeneration to varying extents depending on the organ.
