Parapähkinät, known in English as Brazil nuts, are large seeds extracted from the Brazil nut tree (Bertholletia excelsa), a species native to the Amazon rainforest. The tree is primarily found in countries such as Brazil, Bolivia, and Peru. These nuts grow in large, woody capsules that contain multiple seeds, typically ranging from 10 to 25 per pod, and are valued both for their nutritional content and economic importance.

Brazil nuts are notable for their high selenium content, a mineral essential for human health due to its antioxidant properties. A single serving can provide more than the daily recommended intake of selenium, but excessive consumption may lead to selenium poisoning, so moderation is advised. Besides selenium, these nuts are rich in healthy monounsaturated fats, protein, dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals such as magnesium and zinc.

In culinary uses, Brazil nuts are often eaten raw, roasted, or incorporated into baked goods, confections, and trail mixes. Their rich, creamy texture and distinctive flavor make them popular in various dishes. The nuts are also processed to produce oil, which is used in cooking and cosmetics.
