Etymology and conceptually related terms: the coinage combines paraply, the Danish/Norwegian word for umbrella, with term, highlighting its role as a unifying label. In practice, paraplyterm is closely related to the idea of a hypernym or superordinate term, but it emphasizes inclusivity and the potential for diverse subcategories within the same label.

Usage and examples: paraplyterms are common in knowledge organization, indexing, taxonomy, and discourse analysis. They help with navigation and broad queries, while still permitting refinement. Examples include the umbrella term mammals, which covers humans, whales, and bats; or the umbrella term open source software, which can encompass licenses, projects, communities, and development models.
