For instance, a straight line in two dimensions can be parametrised by x(t) = x0 + at and y(t) = y0 + bt, where t is the parameter. As t varies, the point (x(t), y(t)) traces out the line.

In mathematics and physics, parametrisations are crucial for simplifying complex geometric objects and enabling their analysis. For a curve in three dimensions, two parameters might be used, with each coordinate (x, y, z) being a function of these two parameters. This is particularly useful when dealing with surfaces of revolution or more intricate shapes.
