This arrangement allows for flexible power delivery, enabling the vehicle to operate solely on electric power, solely on the gasoline engine, or with both working together for maximum performance or efficiency. This contrasts with series hybrids, where the gasoline engine acts solely as a generator to charge the battery or power the electric motor.

In a parallel hybrid system, the electric motor and the internal combustion engine are typically connected to the same transmission or drive shaft. This mechanical linkage allows for direct power transfer from either or both sources to the wheels. The control system manages the power split between the two sources, optimizing for fuel economy during cruising, providing extra power for acceleration, or enabling regenerative braking to recapture energy.

The advantage of parallel hybrids lies in their simpler mechanical design compared to some other hybrid architectures, potentially leading to lower manufacturing costs. They also offer a familiar driving experience to conventional vehicles. However, the efficiency gains might not be as pronounced as in series or series-parallel hybrid systems, especially in stop-and-go traffic where a series configuration might be more advantageous.
