Parafiinikerros

Parafiinikerros is a thin coating of paraffin wax applied to a surface to create a moisture and gas barrier, reduce friction, and provide protection against physical damage. The coating is typically transparent and colorless, and food-grade paraffin can be used when the coated item is intended for contact with food.

Application methods include dipping, spraying, or immersion in molten paraffin, followed by cooling to solidify the layer. The resulting film is usually only a few micrometers to tens of micrometers thick, depending on the substrate and purpose.

Common uses are diverse. In the food industry, fruits, vegetables, and baked goods may receive a paraffin coating to slow moisture loss and oxidation and to extend shelf life. In wood and metal products, paraffin layers help reduce water uptake and protect against corrosion and staining. In textiles and paper products, paraffin can impart water-repellent properties or act as a release or barrier layer.

Advantages of paraffin coatings include low cost, ease of application, chemical inertness, and suitability for food contact when using appropriate wax. Limitations include potential cracking or flaking under flexing, softening at moderately elevated temperatures, and the possibility of altering surface texture or appearance. Removal or reapplication may be required as wear occurs.

Regulatory considerations depend on the intended use and the wax grade; food-contact applications typically require food-grade paraffin and adherence to local food safety regulations.
