Paradiseus

Paradiseus is a genus of birds in the family Paradisaeidae, commonly known as birds of paradise. The genus currently contains two species, the greater bird-of-paradise (Paradiseus apoda) and the lesser bird-of-paradise (Paradiseus minor). Both species are native to New Guinea and surrounding islands.

The greater bird-of-paradise is a large bird, measuring up to 43 cm in length, with males possessing elaborate plumage of bright yellow and white feathers. Females are duller in color. The lesser bird-of-paradise is smaller, reaching about 30 cm, with males displaying iridescent green, yellow, and orange plumage.

These birds are renowned for their complex courtship displays, during which males showcase their vibrant feathers and perform intricate dances to attract females. Their diet consists mainly of fruits and insects. They inhabit rainforests and are often found in the canopy.

Both species of Paradiseus are a significant part of the cultural heritage of indigenous peoples in New Guinea, who have historically used their feathers for adornments. The conservation status of these birds varies, with some populations facing threats from habitat loss and hunting.
