Papierart

Papierart refers to visual artworks in which paper is the primary medium or foundational material. The field covers two main directions: two-dimensional works such as collage, paper cutting, and decoupage; and three-dimensional forms including paper sculpture, origami, kirigami, and papier-mâché. Artists may work with a single type of paper or combine it with ink, paint, glue, and other media.

Common materials include washi, cotton rag, kraft, or newsprint papers, as well as inks, pigments, adhesives, scissors, knives, and cutting tools. Techniques range from folding (origami) and cutting (kirigami, traditional papercutting) to tearing, layering, embossing, and scoring. Surface treatments, collage elements, print elements, and lighting effects are also used to expand the visual possibilities. The practice often emphasizes precision, craftsmanship, and the handling of fragile materials.

Historically, paper-based art has deep roots in Asia. Origami is associated with Japan, while Chinese paper-cutting has a long tradition. In Europe, collage and decoupage gained prominence in the 19th and 20th centuries, and in modern art, artists such as Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse popularized cut-paper techniques. Contemporary practitioners such as Li Hongbo and Thomas Demand push paper sculpture into large-scale and architectural dimensions. The medium remains widely used in installations, book arts, design, and education.

Papierart intersects with crafts and fine art, and it raises questions of conservation, fragility, ephemerality, and sustainability. Its accessibility and versatility make it a frequent entry point for experimentation with form, color, and narrative.
