Pangasiidae

Pangasiidae is a family of ray-finned fish commonly known as pangas or shark catfishes. These fish are native to freshwater and brackish habitats in tropical Asia, primarily in the Mekong and Chao Phraya river basins. The family is characterized by a broad, flattened head, a long dorsal fin, and two pairs of barbels extending from the snout. Pangasiids are generally large, schooling fish that feed on a variety of organisms including fish, crustaceans, and detritus.

Several species within Pangasiidae are commercially important, particularly for aquaculture. Pangasianodon hypophthalmus, known as the Siamese shark or iridescent shark, is widely farmed for its white, flaky flesh and is a common food fish in many parts of the world. Other notable genera include Pangasius and Helicophagus. While many species are found in Asia, their aquaculture has led to their presence in markets globally. Conservation concerns exist for some wild pangasiid populations due to habitat degradation and overfishing. Research continues to understand their biology, ecology, and sustainable management practices.
