Panamaxsized

Panamaxsized refers to the largest ship size that can transit the Panama Canal. This size is determined by the canal's lock dimensions, which are 110 feet (33.53 meters) wide, 1,000 feet (304.8 meters) long, and 41.2 feet (12.56 meters) deep. Vessels designed to these maximum dimensions are known as Panamax.

The original locks of the Panama Canal were constructed between 1903 and 1914. Over time, as global shipping grew and vessels became larger, the Panamax dimensions became a limiting factor. This led to the construction of new, larger locks, known as Neo-Panamax, which opened in 2016. These new locks can accommodate larger vessels, generally up to 160 feet (48.77 meters) wide and 1,200 feet (365.76 meters) long.

Ships that exceed the original Panamax dimensions but can still fit through the new Neo-Panamax locks are often referred to as New Panamax or Neo-Panamax. The term Panamax, however, continues to be used to describe the historical maximum size that could pass through the original canal. The ability of a ship to be Panamaxsized was a significant consideration for many shipping companies and influenced vessel design for decades.
