Palmitoylation is a post-translational modification where a palmitoyl group is covalently linked to a cysteine residue within a protein. This lipid modification is generally reversible and plays a crucial role in regulating protein localization, stability, and interactions. The process of palmitoylation is often mediated by palmitoyl acyltransferases (PATs).
