Palmeolie

Palmeolie, also known as palm oil, is a vegetable oil derived from the fruit of oil palm trees, principally Elaeis guineensis. It is one of the most produced and traded vegetable oils worldwide, notable for its high yield per hectare compared with other crops.

Production and processing: The oil is extracted from the mesocarp of the oil palm fruit; palm kernel oil is obtained from the kernel. Crude palm oil is refined and fractionated for edible use in foods and cosmetics. The oil is semi-solid at room temperature due to a relatively high saturated fat content, particularly palmitic acid, and it also contains oleic acid and natural antioxidants such as tocotrienols.

Uses: Palm oil is widely used in cooking and food products, including margarine, baked goods, and processed foods. It also serves as a component in cosmetics, soaps, detergents, and as a feedstock for biodiesel.

Environmental and social aspects: The expansion of oil palm cultivation has been linked to deforestation, habitat loss for wildlife, and peatland drainage, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. Sustainability efforts include the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) certification, but debates continue about effectiveness, enforcement, and land-use impacts, prompting calls for improved tracing, governance, and social safeguards.

Economy and regulation: Indonesia and Malaysia dominate production, with growing interest in other regions. Palm oil markets are influenced by demand from the food, consumer goods, and biofuel sectors. Ongoing policy discussions address health considerations, environmental impacts, and consumer labeling related to palm oil.
