Palliatiivsete

Palliatiivsete refers to palliative care, a specialized medical approach focused on providing relief from the symptoms and stress of a serious illness. The primary goal of palliative care is to improve quality of life for both the patient and the family. It is not limited to end-of-life care, but can be provided at any stage of a serious illness, alongside curative treatments.

The interdisciplinary team providing palliative care often includes doctors, nurses, social workers, chaplains, and other specialists. They work together to address a wide range of needs, including pain management, symptom control (such as nausea, fatigue, or shortness of breath), emotional support, spiritual care, and practical assistance. Communication is a key element, ensuring that patient and family wishes are understood and respected.

Palliative care can be delivered in various settings, including hospitals, outpatient clinics, nursing homes, and the patient's own home. It is distinct from hospice care, although there is overlap. Hospice care is a type of palliative care specifically for individuals with a prognosis of six months or less to live, who are no longer seeking curative treatments. Palliative care, conversely, can be initiated at any point in a serious illness, regardless of prognosis. Its aim is to enhance comfort and support throughout the disease trajectory.
