Palkkiseinät

Palkkiseinät, a Finnish term, refers to load-bearing walls constructed using timber framing techniques. This method is a common and traditional approach to building in many parts of the world, including Finland. In a palkkiseinä, a framework of vertical studs and horizontal beams, typically made of wood, forms the structural skeleton of the wall. This framework is then covered with various materials to create the interior and exterior surfaces, providing insulation and weather protection.

The studs are usually spaced at regular intervals, providing support for the sheathing and finishing materials. Horizontal pieces, known as plates or headers, connect the studs at the top and bottom, and also frame openings for doors and windows.
