Paleosystematics is a branch of paleontology that focuses on the classification, nomenclature, and evolutionary relationships of extinct organisms. It integrates principles from systematics—the scientific study of the diversity of life and its evolutionary history—with paleontological data to reconstruct phylogenetic trees and understand the evolutionary trajectories of past species.

The field emerged as a response to the need for a structured approach to categorizing fossils, drawing heavily on traditional taxonomy but adapting it to accommodate the unique challenges posed by extinct taxa. Paleosystematists analyze morphological features, anatomical details, and sometimes molecular remnants preserved in fossils to infer evolutionary connections. Unlike modern systematics, which often incorporates genetic data, paleosystematics relies primarily on comparative anatomy and stratigraphic evidence, such as the geological age and distribution of fossils.

Challenges in paleosystematics arise from incomplete fossil records, taphonomic biases, and the difficulty of interpreting soft-tissue preservation or behavioral traits in extinct species.
