Palautusarvoin is a Finnish term that translates to "return value" or "redemption value" in English. It refers to the concept of an item or asset having a predetermined value that can be reclaimed under specific circumstances. This concept is most commonly encountered in the context of packaging, particularly with beverage containers like bottles and cans.

In Finland, many beverage containers are subject to a deposit-refund system. When consumers purchase a beverage in such a container, they pay a small additional fee, the deposit. Upon returning the empty container to a designated collection point, such as a supermarket or a specialized recycling machine, this deposit is refunded to the consumer. The amount of this refund, or palautusarvoin, is typically fixed for each type of container.

Beyond beverage packaging, the principle of palautusarvoin can be applied to other areas. For instance, certain durable goods might have a buy-back option where the manufacturer or retailer offers a specific amount for the product if returned after a certain period.
