Palankas

Palankas are a type of fortified settlement found in various parts of the world, particularly in Eastern Europe and the Balkans. Historically, they served as defensive structures against raids and invasions, offering refuge to local populations. The term "palanka" itself is often derived from Slavic words related to walls or fortifications.

These structures typically consisted of a wooden palisade or stockade surrounding a settlement, sometimes reinforced with earthworks or ditches. The size and complexity of palankas varied greatly, from small, isolated watchtowers to larger villages enclosed by substantial defenses. They were common during periods of conflict, such as the Ottoman expansion into Europe, where they played a crucial role in border defense.

The design of a palanka was practical, focusing on creating a barrier that was difficult to breach. Entrances were usually guarded by gates and sometimes by additional defensive features. Inside, buildings were often constructed close together to maximize the use of space and offer mutual protection. While many palankas have since disappeared or fallen into ruin, some remain as archaeological sites or have been partially reconstructed as historical monuments. Their existence provides valuable insight into the defensive strategies and daily life of communities in pre-modern times.
