Pakkausteorioihin, meaning "packing theories" in Finnish, refers to a branch of mathematics concerned with problems of arranging objects within a given space. This field investigates how to most efficiently fit a set of items, whether they are spheres, cubes, or more complex shapes, into a larger container such as a box, a sphere, or even an infinite space. The primary goal is to maximize the number of items packed, minimize wasted space, or achieve a specific arrangement.

One of the most famous problems in packing theory is the sphere packing problem, which asks for the densest possible arrangement of identical spheres in a given volume. For three-dimensional space, the conjecture that the densest packing is achieved by the face-centered cubic (FCC) or hexagonal close-packed (HCP) lattices, with a density of approximately 74%, was famously proven by Thomas Hales in 2014. Other packing problems involve packing circles in a square, squares in a circle, or even irregular shapes.
