Pakettihäviö, often referred to as packet loss in English, is a phenomenon in computer networking where one or more packets of data traveling across a network fail to reach their intended destination. This can occur for a variety of reasons, including network congestion, faulty network hardware, software errors, or even physical damage to network cables. When packet loss occurs, the data within those packets is effectively lost, which can lead to several negative consequences for network users and applications.

The impact of packet loss can range from minor inconveniences to significant disruptions. For instance, in real-time applications like voice or video calls, packet loss can manifest as dropped audio, choppy video, or complete disconnections, severely degrading the user experience. In data transfer applications, packet loss can result in incomplete downloads or corrupted files, requiring retransmissions and slowing down the overall transfer process.
