Pakastelokeron is a Finnish term that translates to "freezer compartment" or "freezer drawer" in English. It refers to the specific section within a refrigerator or a standalone freezer designed for storing frozen food items. This compartment is maintained at a temperature significantly below freezing, typically around -18 degrees Celsius (0 degrees Fahrenheit) or lower, to ensure the long-term preservation of food.

The design of a pakastelokeron can vary. In combination refrigerators and freezers, it is often located at the bottom, top, or side, sometimes as a drawer or a door-equipped section. Standalone freezers, also known as pakastimet, are entirely dedicated to this purpose and can come in chest freezer or upright freezer configurations, offering a larger capacity for frozen goods.

The primary function of a pakastelokeron is to inhibit the growth of microorganisms and slow down enzymatic processes that cause food spoilage. This allows food to be stored for extended periods, preserving its texture, flavor, and nutritional value.
