The term refers to both the protein and its encoding gene, usually part of a small operon with a regulatory element called PXt1R and a conceptual promoter named Ppx.

Structure and family: In common depictions, PXt1 is a multi-pass membrane protein predicted to have eight to ten transmembrane helices and to reside in the inner membrane of Gram-negative bacteria. It is often placed within an operon that includes a regulator and an exporter module, illustrating simple gene organization for transport systems.

Function and mechanism: PXt1 is described as an exporter that transports a hypothetical metabolite, PX, from the cytoplasm to the extracellular space. Energy coupling is shown variably; some sources depict proton motive force, others ATP-dependent transport. Regulatory interactions with PXt1R can yield inducible expression and a feedback loop in response to PX levels.

Status and usage: There is no verified natural occurrence of PXt1 in real genomes, and it is not reported in primary scientific literature as a real gene.
