PSVR

PSVR is Sony's line of virtual reality headsets for PlayStation consoles. The original PlayStation VR released for the PlayStation 4 in 2016, providing a consumer VR experience tied to a game console. A second generation, PlayStation VR2, followed for the PlayStation 5, bringing higher fidelity and new input while remaining Sony's PS-focused VR platform.

Original PSVR features include a 5.7-inch OLED display with about 1080p total resolution (roughly 960 by 1080 per eye). It uses external tracking via the PlayStation Camera and supports input from PlayStation Move controllers or the DualShock 4. A separate processing box connects to the PS4 via HDMI and USB, and the headset includes a 3.5 mm audio jack for headphones. PSVR2 introduces inside-out tracking with no external camera, a single USB-C connection to the PS5, and a higher resolution OLED display around 2000 by 2040 pixels per eye with support for up to 120 Hz. The Sense controllers feature advanced haptics and adaptive triggers, and the system includes eye tracking and Tempest 3D AudioTech. A PS5 is required, and the library includes titles such as Horizon Call of the Mountain and Resident Evil Village, among others.

Reception has praised PSVR for expanding console VR and PSVR2 for improved visuals and comfort, though it faces critique for price and theNeed for a PlayStation 5. Together, the PSVR line has established Sony’s ongoing involvement in consumer VR and helped broaden headset-based gaming.
