PRINCE2rungon is a hypothetical project management methodology that combines the PRINCE2 framework with an imagined multi-layer governance concept referred to as rungon. The term is not part of the official PRINCE2 standard and has appeared primarily in speculative discussions about extending PRINCE2 for large, complex programs.

Conceptually, PRINCE2rungon retains the PRINCE2 emphasis on defined products, staged planning, and clearly assigned roles while introducing rungon governance tiers that provide tiered decision points and gating. Each rung represents a governance level with its own accountabilities, artefacts, and metrics. Projects move through stages under the supervision of executive sponsors and rungon‑level review boards at each level.

Core elements include defined roles aligned to PRINCE2, a product-based planning approach, and ongoing justification, with the addition of rungon artefacts such as a rungon register, escalation matrix, and tiered tolerances. The approach aims to improve alignment with large-scale, multi-party programs and regulatory requirements by formalizing cross-tier assurance and oversight.

Relation to PRINCE2: PRINCE2rungon preserves core PRINCE2 practices but adds a governance layering that is intended to enhance control and transparency across multiple organizational boundaries. Critics argue that it adds unnecessary complexity and potential duplication of effort, while proponents claim it provides better risk management and stakeholder visibility in complex environments.

Adoption and usage: As a theoretical concept, PRINCE2rungon has limited real-world implementation and is primarily discussed in academic or training contexts. It is not an official standard, and many practitioners prefer applying PRINCE2 with organization-specific governance enhancements rather than a formalized PRINCE2rungon methodology.
