PNliitoslämpötilaanturi, often translated as PN junction temperature sensor, is a semiconductor device that utilizes the properties of a PN junction to measure temperature. A PN junction, formed by joining P-type and N-type semiconductor materials, exhibits a voltage-temperature relationship that is largely predictable. As the temperature of the PN junction changes, the forward voltage drop across it also changes. This change in voltage can be measured and calibrated to determine the ambient temperature.

These sensors are typically integrated into semiconductor chips, such as microcontrollers or integrated circuits, allowing for on-chip temperature monitoring. The advantage of this method is its simplicity and low cost, as it uses existing semiconductor structures. The sensitivity of a PN junction temperature sensor is usually expressed in millivolts per degree Celsius. While not as precise as some other temperature sensing technologies, PN junction sensors are suitable for many general-purpose temperature monitoring applications where high accuracy is not the primary requirement. They are often used for thermal management and protection within electronic devices, triggering alerts or shutdowns when temperatures exceed safe operating limits.
