PETpolymeeri, or polyethylene terephthalate, is a thermoplastic polymer resin of the polyester family. It is a clear, strong, and lightweight plastic commonly used in the production of beverage bottles, food containers, and synthetic fibers. PET is formed through a polycondensation reaction between ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid. Its chemical structure provides excellent barrier properties against gases and moisture, making it ideal for packaging applications.

The versatility of PET allows it to be processed using various methods, including injection molding, blow molding, and extrusion. Its recyclability is a significant environmental advantage. Used PET can be collected, sorted, and reprocessed into new products, reducing the need for virgin materials and diverting waste from landfills. The recycling process typically involves shredding, washing, and melting the plastic, which can then be used to create new bottles, fibers for clothing and carpets, or even industrial strapping.

Beyond packaging and textiles, PET finds applications in films, magnetic recording tape, and components for the automotive and electrical industries. Its low cost, combined with its desirable properties, has contributed to its widespread adoption globally. Ongoing research aims to further enhance PET's performance and sustainability, including the development of bio-based PET and improved recycling technologies.
