Põrketugevus refers to the strength of a material's resistance to fracture when subjected to a sudden impact or shock load. It is a critical property in engineering design, particularly for components that may experience sudden stresses, such as in automotive safety systems, construction materials, and aerospace applications. Unlike static strength, which measures resistance to gradual loading, põrketugevus accounts for the dynamic nature of impact events.

This property is typically measured using standardized tests, most commonly the Charpy impact test and the Izod impact test. In these tests, a notched specimen of the material is struck by a swinging pendulum. The energy absorbed by the material during fracture, as indicated by the height the pendulum reaches after the impact, is a measure of its põrketugevus.
