Oyai

Oyai is a fictional coastal town used in world-building and storytelling to illustrate a small maritime community. It serves as a concise example of how a town in a tropical archipelago might function and evolve over time.

It lies on the northern coast of the island of Lero, in the archipelago of Kyara, within the Liric Ocean. The harbor is sheltered by a protective reef and a rocky headland. The climate is tropical maritime, with a wet season from May to November and average temperatures around 27–29°C.

Historically, Oyai developed as a fishing and trading port in the 17th and 18th centuries. It today serves as the administrative seat of the Oyai District, part of the Kyara Union. Local government operates under a mayor-council system, with services delivered by municipal departments.

The economy centers on fishing, fish processing, boatbuilding, and small-scale tourism. The Market of Seven Colors, held weekly near the harbor, showcases crafts, spices, and seafood. Cultural life centers on seafaring traditions, a local creole language, and cuisine featuring coconut, yams, and fresh fish.

The population is around 5,000, with a mix of fisherfolk, artisans, and migrant workers. Notable landmarks include the Old Lighthouse, Oyai Wharf, and the Coral Gate, a seasonal festival celebrating tides.
