Overføringer

Overføringer is a Norwegian word meaning the act of transferring something from one person or entity to another. In everyday usage, it most commonly denotes bank transfers between accounts, but the term covers a broader range of movements of money, assets and information.

Bankoverføringer can be initiated through nettbank, mobilbank or payment apps. Domestic transfers are typically processed quickly, potentially in real time, whereas international transfers may involve intermediaries, currency conversion and longer settlement times. Beyond money, overføringer can refer to the transfer of assets such as securities or property, or to payroll transfers (lønnsoverføringer) and remittances to family or suppliers.

Process and safeguards: A transfer requires recipient details (account number or IBAN, recipient name), amount and sometimes a reference. The sender's identity is verified, and banks perform anti-money laundering (AML) and know-your-customer (KYC) checks. After authorization, funds are routed through the chosen payment network; domestic transfers often use faster networks, international ones use SWIFT or equivalent. Fees vary by method and currency, and exchange rates apply for currency conversions.

Security and risks: Phishing, input errors, and fraud are common risks. Tips include double-checking recipient information, using secure channels, enabling two-factor authentication, and keeping records of transfer references. Legal and regulatory: In the European Economic Area, payments are governed by PSD2 and related regulations; Norwegian banks comply with AML and data protection rules. For euro transfers, SEPA is commonly used; for other currencies, SWIFT or correspondent banking may apply.
