Overflatens

Overflatens is a term used in several technical disciplines to describe the excessive flattening of a surface or layer during processing. Because it is not a standardized term, its precise meaning varies by field, but it generally refers to an unintended outcome where a material loses texture, roughness, or porosity due to over-aggressive flattening forces.

In materials processing, overflattening can occur during calendering, rolling, or powder compaction when pressure is too high or dwell time too long. This can increase density and reduce porosity, potentially degrading filtration, insulation, or bonding performance, and may introduce residual stresses or warping.

In coatings, plating, or textile finishing, overflattening describes excessive smoothing that removes surface features essential for adhesion, wear resistance, or tactile properties.

Detection and prevention rely on nondestructive metrology such as profilometry or microscopy to assess surface texture and porosity, alongside density or adhesion testing. Prevention strategies include calibrated equipment, feedback control of pressure and temperature, appropriate material selection, and operating within defined process windows.

The term appears in industry reports and methodology notes as a fault condition to be avoided rather than a desired effect. When used, it is typically clarified by context to indicate the specific surface property or layer being compromised.
