Overfillingis

The resulting rise in internal pressure can disrupt perfusion, tissue integrity, or device function.

Causes and contexts vary and may include rapid infusion of large volumes, impaired drainage or clearance, abnormal accumulation due to disrupted transport pathways, or external compression that reduces available capacity.

Pathophysiology involves elevation of intracompartimental pressure, which can compromise microcirculation, promote ischemia, and provoke mechanical distortion. In hollow organs, distension can impair motility or barrier function; in tissues, edema or engorgement can cause pain and dysfunction; in implanted reservoirs, overflow can lead to leakage or mechanical failure.

Clinical presentation is location-dependent but may include swelling, pain, tightness, reduced mobility, dyspnea, neurologic symptoms, or signs of device malfunction. Diagnosis combines history, physical examination, and imaging or pressure measurements when applicable, along with exclusion of other causes of swelling or distension.

Management focuses on reversing the overfill: controlling input, enhancing drainage or drainage pathways, decompressing the compartment, and treating complications such as ischemia. The prognosis hinges on prompt recognition and location, with potential for recovery if addressed before irreversible injury occurs.
