Oufkir

Oufkir is a surname of Moroccan origin. It is most notably associated with General Oufkir, whose full name was Mohamed Oufkir. He was a prominent figure in Moroccan politics and military during the mid-20th century. Born in 1920, he played a significant role in the country's independence movement and later served in various high-ranking positions within the government and the Royal Moroccan Army.

General Oufkir was instrumental in consolidating power after Morocco gained independence from France in 1956. He held positions such as Minister of Interior and Minister of Defense. He was known for his loyalty to King Hassan II and his effectiveness in maintaining order. However, his career took a dramatic turn in 1971 when he was implicated in an attempted coup d'état against the King. Following the failed coup, he was arrested.

In 1972, he was further accused of involvement in a second, more serious assassination attempt on King Hassan II's plane. The exact extent of his involvement and the circumstances surrounding his death remain subjects of debate and historical analysis. Official accounts state he committed suicide in prison in August 1972. His family, particularly his wife Fatna Oufkir and daughter Malika Oufkir, have since written memoirs detailing their experiences and the period following his alleged downfall, bringing further attention to his legacy and the political climate of Morocco at the time.
