Otidiformes

Otidiformes is an order of birds that encompasses the bustards and their relatives. These birds are primarily found in open country habitats such as grasslands, savannas, and steppes across parts of Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. Bustards are renowned for being among the heaviest flying birds in the world, with males of some species significantly outweighing females. They are omnivorous, feeding on a diet of plants, insects, and small vertebrates.

The most distinctive feature of many bustard species is the elaborate courtship display performed by the males. These displays often involve puffing out their plumage, strutting, and vocalizations to attract females. The family Otitidae contains only a single genus, Otis, which includes the great bustard. However, other families are sometimes included within Otidiformes, depending on the taxonomic classification used.

These birds are generally ground-dwelling and can run with considerable speed. They typically nest on the ground, laying a small clutch of eggs. Bustards face various conservation challenges, including habitat loss and degradation due to agricultural expansion and hunting. Their populations have declined in many areas, leading to their classification as vulnerable or endangered for several species.
