Otantamenetelmistä refers to sampling methods in statistics. Common probability sampling techniques include simple random sampling, where every individual has an equal chance of selection; systematic sampling, where elements are selected at regular intervals from a random starting point; stratified sampling, where the population is divided into subgroups (strata) and random samples are drawn from each stratum; and cluster sampling, where the population is divided into clusters and a random sample of clusters is selected, followed by sampling within those clusters.

Non-probability sampling methods, on the other hand, do not guarantee that each member has a known chance of selection. These methods are often used when probability sampling is impractical or too costly. Examples include convenience sampling, where individuals are selected based on their easy availability; purposive sampling, where participants are chosen based on specific characteristics relevant to the study; quota sampling, similar to stratified sampling but without random selection within strata; and snowball sampling, where existing participants refer new ones.
