Osäkerhetsintervallet

Osäkerhetsintervallet, often translated as confidence interval in English, is a statistical concept used to quantify the uncertainty associated with an estimate of a population parameter. Instead of providing a single point estimate, an osäkerhetsintervall provides a range of values within which the true population parameter is likely to lie. This range is calculated based on sample data and a chosen confidence level.

The confidence level, typically expressed as a percentage (e.g., 95%), indicates the probability that the interval will contain the true population parameter if the sampling process were repeated many times. A 95% confidence interval means that if we were to draw many samples and calculate an osäkerhetsintervall for each, approximately 95% of those intervals would capture the true population parameter.

The width of the osäkerhetsintervall is influenced by several factors, including the variability of the data, the sample size, and the chosen confidence level. A larger sample size generally leads to a narrower interval, indicating a more precise estimate. Similarly, a higher confidence level results in a wider interval, as more values are included to increase the certainty.
